About Yoav Shamir

Yoav Shamir is an award-winning documentary filmmaker whose work combines investigative curiosity, observational storytelling, humor, and a willingness to ask difficult questions.
For more than twenty-five years, he has explored the people, beliefs, conflicts, and contradictions that shape our world. His films often begin with a simple question and evolve into unexpected journeys that challenge assumptions, reveal hidden truths, and uncover the complexity behind familiar stories.
Shamir's films have screened at leading international festivals including Sundance, Berlinale, IDFA, Hot Docs, and Tribeca, and have been broadcast worldwide by networks including the BBC, ARTE, Channel 4, CBC, SBS Australia, and VPRO.
Whether investigating antisemitism, documenting life at military checkpoints, following young Israelis across India, exploring the nature of heroism, questioning the foundations of religion, or chasing a mysterious rock across the Canadian wilderness, his films are united by a fascination with human nature and the stories people tell themselves and others.
In addition to filmmaking, Shamir regularly speaks at festivals, universities, cultural institutions, and community events around the world, sharing insights into documentary storytelling, the creative process, and the often unpredictable adventures that happen behind the camera.
He is still searching for stories that surprise him.
